The touching people around me

A sculpture in Hong Kong. My girl said it could become a home if it is covered by a piece of cloth. Why think of home rather than any other stuff? because there are many homeless people in the world.
The end of last semester, Mrs. Barrie called in to show her
congratulations on my child's French exam, saying that she had done
the best in oral and written exams and she was impressed with her
passion and talent on studying French, etc.
It is a touching call for me. A secondary school teacher is very
busy in North America, besides teaching, they need to work on their
own professional development, one to one parents meeting, field
trips, etc. But she still remember showing her appreciation by
making a call to the parent.
Mrs. Barrie's call remind me of her husband, Mr. Barrie, a previous
president of my child's elementary school.
Before moving back to
Vancouver in 2007, I sent him am email from Hong Kong, asking if
there is a seat for my child because it is Grade 7, and there were
a lot of Asian students moving to North America at this age. Mr.
Barrie promised a seat for my child. When we arrived Vancouver, we
followed the normal path to apply for the seat of a local school,
though Mr. Barrie told me he kept a seat for us. But the school
board usually needs to verify the student's immigrant status before putting
her into a school, so we chose to follow the normal way first.
However, it could take 3 weeks to process the verification and the
English exams for a new student, and the school semester already started. So
I tried to call Mr. Barrie. He said,
"I am waiting for you, why you are so late? It is 2 days passed
over the date you are supposed to be here."
I told him it is because we are following the normal school
placement, they need her to rewrite English test.
He said he could meet us immediately. After seeing him, he said, "I
will call school board to wave her English exam so that she can
come to school immediately."
Shortly after he made the call, my child started her new school. I
took just one week from the day we arrived in this city.
At the first day of the school, we went there earlier. It is so
quiet, suddenly, we heard someone was approaching to us step by
step, with regular but strong beats of walking.
"Hello! Welcome to our school. You must be ......, the new student
in Grade 7?"
"Yes!" My child replied to her right away. She told us she is the
librarian of the school, and already kept a library card for my
child.
Cool! How could she remember all the faces, a couple of hundred
students, and picked my child up at the first glare! So
sharp!
So Mr. and Mrs. Barrie, the librarian and all other people with
same attitude and passion towards youth, have deeply touched us. I
guess this is one of the reasons why my child see Canada as her
home.
